Next year's biggest fight will be for gender equality, expert says

An expert in problems affecting children across the globe, including maternal and newborn health issues, said the fight against gender inequality will be the biggest one of 2012.
Writing for NL-Aid, Cassandra Clifford of anti-slavery movement the Bridge to Freedom Foundation (BTFF) said achieving the same rights for women as for men could help protect young people from abuse.
"This is the year to act, with awareness of such issues as human trafficking, modern slavery, sex tourism, female genital mutilation and child marriages," she stated.

7 women in court for slicing teen girls’ genitals

Malawi Police arrested seven women in the lake-shore northern district of Nkhata Bay for performing genital mutilation on two young girls and they are facing prosecution.
The women are reported to have sliced the vaginas of two girls aged 15 and 16 with a brand new razor blade with the aim of preventing them from prostitution.

Working to Reduce Female Genital Mutilation in Kurdistan

For generations, FGM has been an embedded traditional practice in Kurdistan, but, with the help of a UK-funded project, this is starting to change. The project has the support of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). Draft legislation is currently being discussed in the Kurdish Parliament, which would ban FGM and impose penalties on those who practised it.

Kenya: Kuria Urged to Step Up Fight Against Female Cut

The provincial administration in Kuria East and West districts has been told to step up the war against Female Genital Mutilation. The Education Center for the Advancement of Women (ECAVV) demanded that perpetrators of the vice be brought to book. ECAW's asked to ensure full enforcement of laws that promote girls and women.
"This cruel practice still goes on unabated in many communities, Kuria included. It is also unfortunate that just a few months since the President of Kenya signed the Anti FGM bill into law outlawing FGM, this practice is still going on", said Dennitah Ghati, ECAW's activist.

The Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) introduced a bill aimed at strengthening the 1996 federal law banning female genital mutilation (FGM). The Reid extraterritoriality legislation or “vacation provision” would prohibit the act of transporting a girl abroad in order to subject her to FGM. Often done during school breaks in their parents’ country of origin, the practice of taking girls overseas is commonly used to circumvent the law.
