New ICC boss takes tough line on Kenya

The incoming chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court says she will pursue the cases against Kenyan suspects vigorously. Ms Fatou Bensouda, who is taking over from Mr Luis Moreno-Ocampo, dispelled the notion of being soft. She will be taking over from Mr Moreno-Ocampo, who has a reputation even within the ICC as a prosecutor who loves publicity and who is viewed as being abrasive.

UN Security Council Urged to Act After Syria Death Toll Is Raised to 5,000

The United Nations Security Council faced new calls to intervene in Syria after the UN’s top human- rights official raised the civilian death toll in the country to more than 5,000 and said President Bashar al-Assad’s government should be investigated for crimes against humanity.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay told the 15-member body in New York yesterday that the situation in Syria was “intolerable,” and asked that “gross violations” committed by Assad’s security forces be referred to the International Criminal Court. “Ruthless repression” may soon plunge Syria into “civil war,” she said in prepared remarks.

Africa's Fatou Bensouda is new ICC chief prosecutor

With the African Union (AU) having been a fierce critic of outgoing International Criminal Court chief prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo, it will be hoping for a better relationship with his successor, Fatou Bensouda - the first African to hold a top post at the ICC.
The AU lobbied intensely for the 50-year-old Gambian, endorsing her candidature in June after repeatedly accusing Mr Moreno-Ocampo - an Argentinian whose nine-year term expires next year - of selective justice by only investigating atrocities in Africa.
